Access to the park is free 24 hours a day all year round. It is best reached by car via the cross-island road connecting Argostoli and Poros (signposted route). Check the official park map to plan your routes.
No, access to Mount Ainos National Park is completely free. You only need to cover your own transportation to the base of the mountain or the main parking area.
We recommend setting aside half a day (4–5 hours) to enjoy the main viewpoints, hike to the Megas Soros summit (1,628 m), and admire the endemic fir forests.
It is the green heart of Kefalonia and the only Greek mountain declared a National Park (1962). It is home to the rare Greek fir (Abies cephalonica) and native wild horses that you may spot during your visit.
Spring (April–June), when the vegetation is in bloom, or autumn (September–October), with mild temperatures. In summer the peaks can be covered in mist, and in winter some areas are inaccessible.
Only partially: the main viewpoint (Ainos Road) has paved access to the parking area, but the mountain trails are steep. There are panoramic views from the reception area without needing to walk.
On your way down, don’t miss Myrtos Beach (20 min), Drogarati Cave (35 min), and the capital, Argostoli, with its Mediterranean harbor. More information is available from the Greek tourist office.
