The monastery is usually open every day, generally from 4:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:30 PM to 9:00 PM during the summer. It is located in the Omala Valley, near Valsamata and Fragkata, and the best way to get there is by car or taxi, or by taking a bus from Argostoli.
Admission to the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos grounds is completely free for all visitors. However, it is customary to leave a small voluntary donation if you wish to light a candle or help support the upkeep of the site.
I would recommend setting aside between 45 minutes and an hour for the visit. This will give you enough time to see both the old church and the impressive new church, venerate the relics, and explore the gardens at a relaxed pace.
It is the island’s most sacred religious site, dedicated to Saint Gerasimos, the patron saint of Cephalonia, known for healing mental illnesses. The monastery houses his incorrupt relics and the cave where he lived as an ascetic, making it a vital pilgrimage site.
To avoid crowds, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. If you want to experience local tradition at its fullest, visit during the major feast days on August 16 or October 20, though be prepared for large crowds.
The new church and the outer gardens are fairly accessible and flat. However, access to the old church may involve steps, and the descent into the saint’s cave is not accessible because of its narrow space and vertical stairs.
Right next to the monastery is the Robola Wine Cooperative, where you can taste the famous local wine. You are also close to Mount Ainos National Park if you enjoy nature.
As this is an active and highly respected place of worship, you should dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered (avoid shorts or sleeveless tops). If you want to enter the saint’s cave, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a very narrow space.
