The cave is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in high season (April to October) and from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in low season (November to March). You can get there by rental car or public bus from Argostoli; there are also organized tours that include transport and a guided visit. More information about opening hours and transportation: Melissani Visitor Guide.
Admission costs €7 per person (adults), with €3 discounted tickets for students and free entry for children under 6. You can buy tickets at the ticket office or, we recommend, online in advance to avoid queues. Purchase link: Melissani Cave Tickets.
The guided visit lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes, including the boat ride on the underground lake. If you want to take photos or walk around the outside viewpoint, allow at least 1 hour in total. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to secure your place on the tour.
According to legend, Melissani was the place where the nymph Melissanthi threw herself into the water after being abandoned by her beloved god Pan. Archaeologists also discovered offerings there to the Greek god Pan, indicating its use as a sanctuary in antiquity. Today it is considered a site of great mythical and archaeological value.
The best time is from May to October, when the sun shines directly through the open roof and lights up the turquoise lake. Avoid the middle of the day (12:00 PM-3:00 PM) to avoid crowds and heat. More planning tips: Best Times to Visit Melissani.
Access to the boarding area and the boat ride is accessible; there are ramps and staff available to help with wheelchairs. However, the ground around the entrance may be uneven, so we recommend contacting them in advance: Contact and Accessibility.
Nearby you will find Myrtos Beach (one of the most beautiful in Greece), the Monastery of Agios Gerasimos, and Drogarati Cave, which also offers guided visits. For more nearby route ideas: Recommended Routes in Kefalonia.
Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a light jacket (it is cool inside the cave). Book your ticket in advance and consider downloading an audio guide at iaudioguia.com to discover stories and details that the standard guide does not tell you.
