❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What are the opening hours of Perama Cave and how do I get there from Ioannina?

The cave is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00 in winter (November-March) and until 18:00 in summer (April-October). It is located just 5 km from Ioannina: you can get there by taxi (10 min), city bus (line 7), or car with free parking. Closed on New Year's Day and Orthodox Easter.

How much does admission to Perama Cave cost? Are there any discounts?

General admission is €7, with a reduced rate of €4 for students and visitors over 65. Children under 6 enter free. Cash and cards are accepted. Check updates on the official website or call +30 26510 81521.

How much time is needed to visit the cave?

The guided tour lasts approximately 45 minutes, covering 1 km of illuminated walkways. We recommend allowing 1 hour in total for the visit, including time for photos at the entrance and the panoramic viewpoints over Lake Pamvotis.

Why is Perama Cave special?

It is one of Greece’s most important caves because of its rare geological formations (stalactites, stalagmites, and columns that are 1.5 million years old). During World War II, it served as a refuge for the inhabitants of Perama, adding historical value to its geological importance.

What is the best time to visit the cave?

It is ideal year-round (it always stays at 18°C inside), but to avoid crowds, come on weekdays or early in the morning. In summer it is pleasantly cool; in winter, bring a jacket because of the humidity. Avoid weekends in July and August if you prefer a quieter visit.

Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers?

It is not fully adapted: there are 150 uneven steps and narrow walkways. Wheelchairs and strollers are not allowed. Non-slip footwear is recommended. Babies can be carried in a front carrier.

What other places can be visited near Perama Cave?

Within 10 minutes you can reach: Lake Pamvotis (boat trips to its island), the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina, and Aslan Pasha Mosque. Within 40 minutes: the villages of Zagori and the Bridge of Arta. More info at: Epirus Tourism.

What tips would you give to better enjoy the visit?

1) Wear closed shoes with good grip 2) Bring a light jacket (100% humidity) 3) Flash photography is prohibited to protect the formations 4) Visit the outdoor viewpoint for incredible lake photos 5) Consider an audio guide (€2) to learn more about the geological details.
