¿Sabías que en este lago un tirano se bañaba en sangre y romances prohibidos, mientras unas anguilas guardan el secreto de un milagro?
Lake Pamvotis is always accessible, as it is a natural area. To visit Ioannina Island (Nisi), there are frequent boats departing from the Ioannina lakeside promenade. Boat schedules are usually from 7:00 AM until midnight in summer, with departures every 30 minutes or less. You can find more ferry information at Ioannina.eu.
Access to Lake Pamvotis is free. However, the boat trip to Ioannina Island has a cost. A round-trip ferry ticket usually costs around 2 to 3 euros per person. It is a very reasonable price for the experience it offers.
For a relaxed visit that includes a walk along the lakeshore, the boat trip, and a tour of Ioannina Island with its monasteries and the Ali Pasha Museum, I recommend setting aside between 3 and 4 hours. If you plan to eat on the island, add another hour.
Lake Pamvotis is famous as the setting of the tragic story of Kyra Frosini and above all as the home of the small unnamed island (known as Nisi), where Ali Pasha took refuge and was killed. The island is home to several Byzantine monasteries and the interesting Ali Pasha Museum, which tell the rich history of the region. You can learn more about its history on Wikipedia.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and the beautiful colors of the landscape. During summer, I recommend going early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the hottest hours and enjoy spectacular light over the lake.
The promenade around the lake is generally accessible. However, on Ioannina Island, some areas and access points to the monasteries may have stairs and uneven ground, which could make mobility difficult for wheelchair users. The boats that cross to the island are usually accessible, but it is advisable to check with the ferry company upon arrival.
Ioannina has a lot to offer. Do not miss Ioannina Castle with its Inner Citadel (Its Kale) and the Byzantine Museum. You can also visit the Old Town with its picturesque streets and the Perama Cave, a short drive away. Explore more at Visit Greece.
Wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to walk around the island. Do not forget your camera to capture the beautiful scenery. On the island, try local specialties such as eel or frog legs at one of its restaurants. And of course, leave time to simply sit, relax, and enjoy the tranquility of the lake.
