Donde un gobernante otomano vivió sus últimos días de orgullo y sangre, rodeado de un lago que guarda mil secretos.
The island is open year-round, but the boats generally operate from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Access is by boat from the port of Ioannina, with departures every 15–30 minutes. We recommend checking updated schedules on the official Greek tourism website.
There is no fee to enter the island, but the boat transfer costs approximately €2–3 round trip. Some monasteries may request voluntary donations for maintenance.
It is recommended to allow 2–3 hours to leisurely explore the Byzantine monasteries (such as the Monastery of Philanthropinon), stroll through its historic lanes, and enjoy the lake views.
It was an important cultural center during the Byzantine Empire, with 13th-century monasteries housing unique frescoes. It was also the final refuge of the Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha in the 19th century.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant temperatures. Mornings are ideal for avoiding crowds and taking the best photos in soft light.
The terrain has cobbled streets and steps in the monasteries, making wheelchair access difficult. The boats have narrow steps for boarding. There are no specialized accessibility services.
In Ioannina, you can visit Ali Pasha Castle (500 m from the port), the Municipal Museum of Ioannina with Byzantine collections, and the Perama caves (5 km away). More info: Municipality of Ioannina.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking to the monasteries, bring a bottle of water (there are few shops), use sunscreen in summer, and carry cash for the boats. It is ideal to combine the visit with lunch at local taverns serving fresh fish.
