To have a good experience and appreciate the architecture and exhibitions of the Palace of the Grand Master, we recommend dedicating between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you stop to read all the information panels or take photographs, it could extend a bit longer, but that time will allow you to explore it at a leisurely pace.
The Palace of the Grand Master was the fortress and residence of the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, who ruled Rhodes between 1309 and 1522. It is a monumental witness to their influence and power, and its architecture tells crucial episodes of Templar and medieval history in the Mediterranean. You will be able to learn about the lives of the knights, their battles, and their legacy.
To enjoy the Palace with fewer people, we advise visiting first thing in the morning, just after opening, or late in the afternoon, before closing. The low season (November to March) also offers a quieter experience, although some hours may vary. Avoid the central hours of the day, especially in summer, and keep in mind that the busiest days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Palace of the Grand Master, being a reconstructed medieval building, presents certain accessibility challenges. Some areas have steps and narrow corridors. However, efforts have been made to improve access on the ground floor and in some sections. It is recommended to contact the museum staff upon arrival for specific assistance or to request a hearing aid for your visit. Phone: +30 22410 25500
The Palace of the Grand Master is located in the heart of the Medieval City of Rhodes, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you will have plenty of options nearby. Don't miss the Street of the Knights, the Archaeological Museum (located in the former Hospital of the Knights), and walk along the city walls. Everything is within a short walking distance and you will immerse yourself even more in the chivalric history.
For an optimal experience, we suggest wearing comfortable footwear, as there is a lot of walking and some floors are uneven. Consider downloading an audio guide or joining a guided tour to better understand the history of the place. Also, don't forget your camera, as the photo opportunities are spectacular.
