Discover the Venetian Harbor in Rethymno. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The Venetian Harbor is an open public space, so it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is located at the end of Arkadiou Street, bordering the old town; it is impossible to miss if you walk toward the sea from the historic center.
Access to stroll along the pier and approach the lighthouse is completely free. If you want to make the most of your visit and explore its history in depth without paying for expensive guides, we recommend checking out our immersive audio guides.
To walk along the breakwater, reach the lighthouse, and take photos, you will need about 30 to 45 minutes. However, if you decide to sit at one of the charming terraces and enjoy the atmosphere, the visit can pleasantly stretch to a couple of hours.
Built in the 14th century by the Venetians to boost trade, its jewel is the lighthouse, which curiously has a unique architectural style due to its Egyptian restoration in the 1830s. It is the second surviving Egyptian-style lighthouse in Crete and a silent witness to centuries of maritime history.
Without a doubt, sunset is the magical moment; the sun sets behind the fortress, illuminating the lighthouse with spectacular golden tones. If you prefer to avoid the crowds and feel the sea breeze in solitude, the early morning is ideal.
The paved waterfront promenade where the restaurants are located is flat and accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. However, the section of the wall leading all the way to the base of the lighthouse is narrow, uneven, and can be slippery, so caution is required.
You are in the tourist heart of the city; just a few minutes away on foot you will find the famous Venetian Loggia and the Rimondi Fountain. Just west of the harbor rises the imposing Fortezza of Rethymno, a must-visit if you love history.
The area is full of fish taverns with incredible views, but make sure to check menu prices before sitting down to avoid 'tourist' surprises. Sometimes, restaurants located one or two streets farther into the old town offer better food quality at a better price.
