A neoclassical palace wrapped in myth and beauty, built on Corfu by Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
The palace is open daily from 8:00 to 20:00 in high season (April-October), and from 8:30 to 15:30 in winter; check updates on the official Greek Ministry of Culture website. It is easily reached by KTEL bus from Corfu Town (line 2A, about 20 minutes) or by taxi (€15-20).
General admission costs €10 for adults, €5 for students and visitors over 65, and is free for children under 5 and people with disabilities. You can buy tickets online at etickets.tap.gr to avoid queues.
It is recommended to allow 1 to 2 hours to explore the palace, the gardens, and the main statues. If you want to enjoy the mythological details at a relaxed pace, allow about 2 additional hours.
Built between 1889 and 1891 by Empress Sissi of Austria as a summer retreat, it is dedicated to the hero Achilles and reflects neoclassicism with mythological influences. After her death, it was bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II, who added more statues; today it is a museum showcasing its opulent imperial past.
Spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and fewer tourists; avoid July-August if you do not like crowds. Go early in the morning to enjoy the perfect light in the gardens.
The lower gardens and some outdoor areas are accessible, but the interior of the palace has stairs and there is no full elevator access; free admission is allowed for companions. Check details on the official website or call +30 26610 75125.
Nearby are the beaches of Perama and Kanoni (10-15 minutes by car), Mon Repos Palace, and Corfu Old Town (20 minutes). Do not miss the Achilleion on a route toward the south of the island.
Wear comfortable shoes for the sloping gardens, and bring water and sunscreen; rent an audio guide on site or use apps such as IAudioguia for explanations in Spanish. Visit on weekdays for fewer crowds and combine your trip with a picnic in the gardens.
