Discover the history and secrets of this place with our audio guide.
The Portara is an open-air archaeological site, so it is open 24 hours a day all year round. To get there, simply walk from the seafront by Naxos Port and cross the raised causeway that connects to the islet of Palatia; it is a very pleasant and scenic walk.
Visiting the Portara is completely free; there are no ticket booths or entrance fees. It is a public monument that you can enjoy freely, making it an essential stop that is also kind to your travel budget.
Generally, 30 to 45 minutes is enough to walk to the islet, explore the ruins, and take photographs. However, if you plan to go at sunset, we recommend arriving an hour early to get a good spot and enjoy the spectacle at a relaxed pace.
The Portara is the marble entrance of an unfinished 6th-century BC temple dedicated to Apollo, commissioned by the tyrant Lygdamis. These enormous 80-ton stones are all that remain of what was meant to be a glorious temple, and today it is the most iconic symbol of Naxos and the Cyclades.
Without a doubt, sunset is the most famous and spectacular time, as the sun often aligns with the gateway to create a magical image. If you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy the energy of the place in solitude, the best option is to go early at sunrise.
Access presents difficulties; although there is a paved causeway to the islet, the final stretch to the gateway is uneven, rocky, and sloped terrain. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for wheelchairs and may be challenging for people with reduced mobility or strollers.
You are right next to Naxos Town, so you can visit the Venetian Castle (Kastro) and the Archaeological Museum just a few minutes away on foot. We also suggest exploring the maze of streets in the Old Market, full of shops and traditional taverns, after your visit.
Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes, as the stones can be slippery and the ground is uneven, especially when the northerly wind (the Meltemi) is blowing. Do not forget your camera and, to truly understand what you are seeing, we recommend bringing a downloaded audio guide to enrich your cultural experience.
