¿Sabías que en la cima de este monte se escondían guerreros micénicos hace 3.000 años, vigilando el mar Egeo como halcones?
Mount Zas is open 24 hours a day all year round, as it is a natural outdoor site with no formal restrictions. The main access is via hiking trails starting from villages such as Filoti or Apeiranthos; it is recommended to rent a car or join a guided tour to reach the trailhead. For more details on routes, check the official Naxos tourism website.
Visiting Mount Zas is completely free, as it is a natural and archaeological site open to the public with no entrance fees. There is no need for tickets, but if you choose an organized tour, there may be additional costs for transport or a guide. Check for updates on the Visit Greece portal.
It is recommended to allow between 3 and 5 hours for a full visit, including the hike up the trail (around 1–2 hours uphill) and time at the summit to enjoy the views and explore ruins. If you are new to hiking, plan extra time for breaks. Bring water and snacks to stay hydrated during the route.
Mount Zas, the highest point on Naxos at 1,004 meters, is mythologically associated with Zeus, where according to legend the god was raised. It contains remains of prehistoric Bronze Age settlements, highlighting its role in Cycladic history. This mythological and archaeological connection makes it a fascinating site for understanding ancient Greece.
Spring (April–June) or autumn (September–October) are ideal thanks to the mild weather and less heat, avoiding the summer peaks. Choose early morning for clear views and cooler temperatures, as afternoons can be windy. Avoid days with strong winds by checking the forecast on local apps.
Unfortunately, Mount Zas is not accessible for people with reduced mobility because of its steep, rocky trails, which require good physical condition for hiking. There are no paved paths or facilities such as ramps. If you have limitations, consider nearby viewpoints or adapted tours; contact Naxos Town Hall at +30 22850 22240 for alternatives.
Near Mount Zas, visit the village of Apeiranthos, just 10 km away, known for its cobbled lanes and folk museums, or the beaches of Agios Prokopios, 15 km away, to relax after hiking. Another interesting site is the Monastery of Panachrata on the slopes of the mountain. Explore more on the Naxos attractions map.
Bring comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and at least 2 liters of water per person, as there are no facilities along the path. Start early to avoid the heat and consider a guide if it is your first time; respect nature by not leaving trash behind. For tour bookings, visit activities in Naxos.
