A primeval beech forest in the heart of Germany, a nature sanctuary declared a World Heritage Site.
The National Park is accessible year-round, but the famous Tree Top Walk generally opens from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM in summer and until 4:00 PM in winter. You can check the latest opening hours on its official website.
Access to the forest hiking trails is completely free. However, there is an approximate fee of €12 for adults to go up to the Tree Top Walk, with discounts available for children, students, and family groups.
To enjoy the Tree Top Walk and visit the experience center, allow between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you want to hike one of the trails through the primeval forest, we recommend planning at least half a day (3 to 4 hours).
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it preserves one of the last primeval beech forests in Europe, known as the 'virgin forest in the middle of Germany.' Historically, it was a closed military area, which allowed nature to develop without human intervention for decades.
Spring is spectacular, especially in April and May, when the forest floor turns white with blooming wild garlic. Autumn is also highly recommended for the incredible golden colors of the ancient beech foliage.
Yes, Hainich National Park is an example of accessibility; the Tree Top Walk has an elevator and wide, safe walkways. It is fully suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, allowing everyone to enjoy the heights.
You are very close to the historic city of Eisenach, where you should not miss the impressive Wartburg Castle, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another excellent nearby option is the Wildcat Village in Hütscheroda.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring binoculars, as birdwatching from the treetops is fascinating. Also, download our audio guide before you arrive so you can understand the hidden history of this forest without relying on mobile signal in the area.
