Erfurt, capital de Turingia, es una joya medieval alemana con el único puente cubierto habitado de Europa, una catedral gótica imponente y un casco antiguo que respira historia en cada esquina.
Erfurt's old town is open 24 hours a day for walking around freely. However, to visit the interior of St. Mary's Cathedral, the usual hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, varying according to religious services.
Walking through the streets, squares, and the famous Merchants' Bridge is completely free. You only need to pay admission if you want to enter specific museums such as the Old Synagogue or the tunnels of Petersberg Citadel, where prices are usually around €8 per adult.
For a complete visit including the cathedral complex, the bridge, and the historic center, I recommend setting aside at least 3 to 4 hours. If you plan to visit museums or enjoy a typical meal at a relaxed pace, ideally dedicate a full day.
Erfurt is a key site in German history and an important place in the life of Martin Luther, who studied here before the Reformation. Its medieval old town is one of the best preserved in the country, standing out as a former trading center on the Via Regia route.
Spring and summer offer very pleasant weather for walking, but the city transforms magically in December with its Christmas Market, located in Cathedral Square. If you prefer to avoid crowds, the months of May or September are ideal.
The center is mostly pedestrian and flat, although the historic cobblestones can present some difficulty for wheelchairs. Most public buildings and local transport are adapted, and there is easier access to reach the cathedral area.
Just 15 minutes away by train you can visit Weimar, the city of the poets Goethe and Schiller. A trip to Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also highly recommended.
Be sure to try the authentic Thuringian Rostbratwurst at the stalls in the market square for a complete local experience. I also suggest using an audio guide so you do not miss the hidden details of Merchants' Bridge, the only fully inhabited bridge north of the Alps.
