Donde las montañas guardan secretos alpinos, emperadores esquiaron y una guarida nazi se convirtió en mirador de postales.
The park is open 24 hours a day all year round, although the visitor centers operate from 8:30 AM to 4:45 PM Tuesday to Sunday (closed Monday). You can arrive by car via the B305 from Salzburg or Munich, or by RVO bus from Berchtesgaden; parking is available at the visitor center. More info on the official website.
Entry to the park is free, but activities such as the boat ride on Lake Königssee cost about €20–25 round trip per adult. There are discounts for children and families; check updated rates on the official website or buy online to avoid lines.
Half a day is recommended for a basic visit to Lake Königssee and short trails, or a full day for intensive hiking such as routes toward Watzmann. Plan according to your pace so you do not feel rushed and can enjoy the scenery.
Created in 1978, it is Germany’s only Alpine national park, protecting unique biodiversity with peaks such as Watzmann. Nearby is the Obersalzberg area, a Nazi historical site with the Eagle’s Nest, adding deep cultural significance related to World War II.
Spring and autumn offer fewer crowds and vibrant scenery; summer (June to September) is ideal for hiking, but arrive early to avoid traffic. In winter, enjoy skiing, but check snow closures on the official website.
Areas such as the Lake Königssee pier and paved paths are accessible, with adapted boats and wheelchair-friendly routes. However, many mountain areas require good mobility; check the accessibility map on the official website or call +49 8652 643-36.
Visit the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), 10 minutes away by special bus, the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, or Lake Obersee. Salzburg, Austria, is 30 km away with its Old Town; combine them for a fuller trip.
Bring hiking shoes, water, sunscreen, and a waterproof jacket because of the changing Alpine weather; book the boat in advance during high season. Download the park app for offline maps and follow Leave No Trace rules to help preserve nature.
