Unlike the New Lighthouse, Mang Tower is generally not open to the public for free access. Its interior can only be visited during special events, such as fairy-tale readings ('Fairy Tale Hours') that usually take place in summer; I recommend checking the Lindau events calendar before you go.

Admiring its architecture and taking photos from the harbor promenade is completely free. If you happen to visit during one of the fairy-tale readings or special openings, there is usually a small symbolic fee, but for 90% of tourists, it is a free visit.

The visit is quick; allow about 15 to 20 minutes to walk around it, read the information plaques, and take good photographs. It is an ideal stop to combine with a stroll along the harbor waterfront promenade.

Built in the 12th century, it served as the city’s old lighthouse and watchtower until 1856. It is famous for its colorful tiled roof and for its folkloric connection to Rapunzel, whose braid is often seen hanging from one of its windows.

Yes, the harbor promenade where the tower stands is flat and paved, fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. However, the interior of the historic tower has only old stairs and is not accessible.

You are in Lindau’s iconic heart: right opposite you will see the famous Bavarian Lion and the New Lighthouse (which you can climb). You are also just a few steps from the old town and the historic Old Town Hall.

Do not stay only at the base; walk a little toward the Lion Pier to get a panoramic photo that captures Mang Tower, the lake, and the Alps in the background. And bring a good explanatory audio guide to understand the defensive details of the façade that can easily go unnoticed at first glance.
