The Kehlsteinhaus is open every day, generally from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (bus operating hours), although times may vary depending on the season and weather conditions. It is essential to reserve your spot in advance, especially during high season, through the official website where you can also check the exact schedule for the day of your visit.
The main access is via the Kehlsteinbus from the Documentation Parking lot (P Parking). It costs approximately €25.80 for adults and includes the round-trip bus ride and admission to the viewpoint. Tickets can only be purchased on the day of your visit at the parking ticket office, not online; I recommend arriving very early to secure a spot, as they sell out quickly.
Plan at least 2 to 3 hours for the full experience: 15 minutes for the uphill bus ride, 10 minutes by elevator to the viewpoint, plus time for photos and the documentary exhibition. If you want to visit the small historical interpretation center inside the building or wait in line for the elevator, it is better to allow a full 3 hours.
It is a historic building constructed in 1937-1938 as a private retreat for Adolf Hitler, accessible only via the Kehlstein Road and a 41-meter elevator carved into the rock. After World War II, it fell out of use and today serves as a documentation center and a spectacular viewpoint over the Alps, with exhibitions that place its Nazi past in context.
The best months are May-June and September-October, when there are fewer crowds and the weather is more stable for enjoying the views. In terms of timing, the first ascent of the day (9:00 a.m.) offers better lighting for photos and shorter elevator lines; avoid summer weekends if possible.
Access is limited: the bus and the internal elevator are accessible, but the viewpoint has several stairs and uneven areas that make the full visit difficult. I recommend contacting the center directly to ask about specific services and alternatives: phone +49 (0)8652 2969.
In the same parking area, there is a very complete Documentation Center and a small museum explaining the history of the Third Reich in Berchtesgaden. In addition, if you head down from the parking area, you can visit Lake Königssee, Lake Obersee, or the historic General Walker Hotel; all of these attractions are just a few minutes away by car.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket, because it can be very cold and windy at the summit even if it is warm below. You cannot bring food or drinks up, but there is a small kiosk at the parking base; use your audio guide from iAudioguia to learn the history without distractions, and if you are driving, arrive before 8:30 a.m. to park close to the ticket office.
