La iglesia que sobrevivió a bombas, nazis y bomberos borrachos - con una cúpula de cebolla que vale más que su peso en oro
It is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (hours may vary in winter). It is mainly reached by electric boat from the Königssee pier (30-minute journey). Check updated schedules at Schifffahrt Königssee or by calling +49 8652 96360.
Access to the exterior and the small atrium is free. To enter the historic interior, a €1–2 donation is recommended to help with maintenance. No advance booking is required.
A full visit takes about 20–30 minutes. It is small but very photogenic. If you want to walk around the peninsula or attend Mass (Sundays at 10:30 AM), allow 1–1.5 hours.
Built in 1697, it is an icon of Bavarian Baroque. It stands out for its unique location beside Lake Königssee and its red dome with a white roof. St. Bartholomew is the patron saint of shepherds and woodcutters, both vital in this Alpine region.
Autumn (September–October) offers the most spectacular colors. Avoid July and August because of the crowds. The first boats in the morning (8:30–10:00 AM) are less busy and the light is ideal for photography.
The main pier has adapted access, but inside the church there are small steps and uneven ground. The path from the dock to the church is compact gravel. It is recommended to check details with the Tourist Office.
Do not miss: 1) a boat ride to Salet with a walk to Lake Obersee (45 minutes from the church), 2) the Berchtesgaden salt mine (Salt Mine), and 3) the Jennerbahn viewpoint for panoramic views.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground. Mornings usually have less fog. Respect silence during religious services. Bring cash, as not all boats accept cards. More information at Bavaria Tourism.
