The church is generally open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and on Sundays after Mass (check worship schedules). Tourist visits may not be allowed during religious ceremonies. We recommend checking updates on the Diocese website.
Admission is free, although donations for maintenance are appreciated (suggested €2–3). No advance booking is required for individual visitors.
About 30–45 minutes is enough to appreciate the Romanesque architecture, the reliefs on the main portal, and the choir. If you also include the adjacent cloister, allow an additional 15 minutes.
Founded in 1121, it is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Franconia. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble together with Bamberg's historic center.
Early in the morning (before 11 am) or after 4 pm. The months of April–May and September–October offer pleasant weather with fewer tourists than in summer.
It has partial accessibility: the main nave is accessible, but there are steps in the choir and cloister. There is no elevator. Assistance is recommended for wheelchair users.
A 5-minute walk away are Bamberg Cathedral (with the tomb of Pope Clement II), the striking Old Town Hall (built over the river), and the historic Schlenkerla breweries. More information is available on the local tourism website.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, use the audio guide available in English (download it in advance at iaudioguia.com), and don't miss the carved capitals depicting biblical scenes.
