An urban oasis in the heart of Hanover, Lake Masch is an artificial body of water that blends history, nature, and leisure.
Access to Lake Masch is free 24 hours a day, every day of the year, as it is a public space. For activities such as boat trips or boat rentals, check schedules with providers such as Maschsee Segeln.
Access to the lake is completely free. Costs only apply if you take part in activities such as renting boats (about €15/hour), pedal boats, or joining special events.
A full walk around the perimeter (6 km) takes about 1 hour 20 minutes on foot. If you include stops for a drink or rent a boat, plan for 2 to 3 hours. Time flies with these views!
It was built between 1934 and 1936 as an employment project during the Great Depression. Its creation removed marshy areas and today it is a symbol of urban recreation. More information at hannover.de.
Spring and autumn are ideal for walks. Summer allows for water activities, so bring swimwear! In the evenings during July and August there is open-air cinema. Avoid rainy winter afternoons.
Yes, the perimeter path is paved and accessible. Some direct access points to the water have steps. During the large Lake Festival in August, some areas may be crowded.
A 10-minute walk away are the New Town Hall of Hanover and the Sprengel Museum of modern art, as well as the Historical Museum. The royal Herrenhausen Gardens are 15 minutes away by tram (lines 4 and 5).
Wear comfortable walking shoes, use sun protection because there is little shade, and bring a bottle of water. In summer, arrive before 11:00 to rent boats. Check events at visit-hannover.com.
