A medieval fortress guarding the waters of Saint-Malo, witness to centuries of maritime and defensive history.
The tower is open from June to September (10:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00), closed on Mondays and public holidays. It is located in the Saint-Servan district. Get there by city bus (routes 2, 3, or 4) or on foot from the center (25 minutes). Check updated hours at Saint-Malo Tourism.
Adults pay €6, students and seniors €4, and visitors under 18 and people with disabilities enter free. Tickets are sold only at the ticket office. Admission includes access to the lighthouse and historical exhibitions. No advance booking is required.
The average visit lasts 30 to 60 minutes. We recommend taking your time to enjoy the panoramic views over the Rance estuary and to explore the exhibition on historic navigation across its three floors.
Built in 1382 by Duke John IV of Brittany to control maritime traffic on the Rance. It has been a historic monument since 1886 and houses a museum about privateer captains. More historical details at National Monuments.
June to September offers full opening hours and the best weather. Avoid rainy days because of the steep stairs. The best time is mid-afternoon: fewer tourists and perfect light to photograph the estuary at sunset.
No, the medieval structure has narrow stairs and no elevator. Only the ground floor is partially accessible. Staff offer alternative virtual visits on touch screens at the base of the tower.
Within 15 minutes: the walled historic center of Saint-Malo (cathedral, castle). Opposite: Dinard (Art Deco beaches). Within 30 minutes: Dinan (medieval town). Route map at Brittany Tourism.
Non-slip shoes are essential because of the stone stairs. Bring a light jacket because of the strong winds at the top. Check the forecast: on clear days you can see as far as Cancale and Mont Saint-Michel. There are no restrooms inside the tower.
