❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When can you visit the Old Bridge in Carcassonne, and how do you get there?

The Old Bridge is open access 24 hours a day, every day. It stands opposite the Medieval Citadel (La Cité), crossing the Aude River from the Bastide district. It is easily reached on foot from the historic center in about 10 minutes. More details: Carcassonne Tourist Office

Do you have to pay an entrance fee to cross the Old Bridge?

No, access to the Old Bridge is completely free. It is a public pedestrian bridge with no cost for visitors. You will only pay if you visit nearby attractions such as the Walled Citadel.

How much time is recommended for visiting the bridge?

We recommend around 15–20 minutes to cross the bridge, enjoy the photographic views of the Citadel, and read the information panels. If you combine it with a walk along the banks of the Aude River, allow about 45 minutes.

What historical importance does this bridge have?

Built in the 14th century (1320–1340), it was for centuries the only access to Carcassonne from the Aude River. It formed part of the city’s defensive system and connected the walled Citadel with the lower town. It survived destruction during the Hundred Years' War.

What is the best time of year and day to visit?

Spring and autumn offer better temperatures and fewer crowds. Early in the morning or at sunset, you will have the best light for photographing the Citadel from the bridge. July and August can be very crowded.

Is it accessible for wheelchairs or people with reduced mobility?

The bridge has uneven cobblestone paving that can make wheelchair access difficult. There are accessible alternative routes along the riverbank. Check accessibility maps here: Accessibility guide

What other places of interest are near the Old Bridge?

Less than a 5-minute walk away you will find: the Medieval Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Saint-Nazaire Basilica, the Museum of the Inquisition, and the ramparts. In the lower town, highlights include Saint-Michel Cathedral and the Canal du Midi. More info: Nearby attractions

What tips would you give to enjoy the visit more?

1) Wear comfortable shoes because of the cobblestones 2) Combine it with the riverside walk called 'Chemin des Anglais' 3) Visit at night to see the Citadel illuminated 4) Download audio guides for the area: Carcassonne Audio Guides. Avoid rainy days because of possible slippery surfaces.
