La Gruta de Massabielle es el sitio sagrado en Lourdes donde la Virgen María se apareció a Bernadette Soubirous en 1858, convirtiéndose en un emblemático lugar de peregrinación mundial.
The Sanctuary of Lourdes is open every day of the year, 24 hours a day, although direct passage beneath the Grotto is usually open from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. Admission is free through the Sanctuary’s main gates (Saint Michael or Saint Joseph); you can confirm updated hours on the official Sanctuary website.
No, entry to the Sanctuary and the Grotto of Massabielle is completely free, as is access to the taps for collecting water. No tickets or reservations are required, although you may leave a donation for the upkeep of the site if you wish.
To see the Grotto, touch the rock, and collect water, you will need about 45 minutes. However, I recommend setting aside at least half a day (3–4 hours) to also visit the three basilicas, walk the Stations of the Cross, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the grounds.
It is the exact site where the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. It is a world-famous pilgrimage site because of its spring, discovered during the apparitions, to which many unexplained and miraculous healings are attributed.
High season runs from April to October; to avoid long lines at the Grotto, I suggest going very early (before 8:00 a.m.) or around lunchtime. If you want the most moving experience, attend the torchlight procession at 9:00 p.m.
Absolutely. Lourdes is a global benchmark for accessibility because of the large number of sick pilgrims it receives. The entire site is flat or has gentle ramps, and wheelchairs are given priority access; they can even be borrowed at the Sanctuary.
Right next to it you will find the spectacular underground Basilica of Saint Pius X and, above the Grotto, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Outside the religious complex, it is well worth climbing up to Lourdes Castle Fort for the best views of the city and the Pyrenees.
Bring containers or empty bottles to take water from the spring with you (there are specific taps for this), and wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Also, download an audio guide to understand the deep history of the place while you wait in line, which can be slow in summer.
