El lago alpino donde el Mont Blanc se mira en un espejo turquesa, pero guarda secretos glaciares que te dejarán sin aliento contando historias en la cena.
The lake is a natural wonder that is always open, but the fastest way up is via the La Flégère cable car, which generally operates from mid-June to mid-September between 8:30 AM and 4:45 PM. From the top station, you’ll need to hike for about 2 hours; check real-time lift conditions at Mont Blanc Natural Resort before you set off.
Visiting the lake itself is completely free; the cost comes from transport if you choose to use the lifts to avoid the hardest part of the climb. A round-trip ticket for the La Flégère cable car is around €30–40 per adult, and you can buy your passes directly at the ticket office or on the official website.
I recommend allowing at least half a day, ideally between 4 and 5 hours in total. The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way from the cable car, plus however long you want to spend up there taking photos of Mont Blanc or having something at the refuge.
Lac Blanc is legendary because it acts like a perfect mirror facing the Mont Blanc massif, offering one of the most iconic panoramas in Europe. Located in the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, it is a historic place to observe alpine flora and, if you’re lucky, wild mountain goats (ibex).
The best season is from July to September, when the snow has cleared from the trails; outside these dates you will need technical equipment. For the perfect photo, go up on the first cable car of the morning: the light is magical, the water is calm, and you’ll avoid the crowds.
To be honest, this is not an accessible route for wheelchairs or baby strollers; it is rocky high-mountain terrain with significant elevation gain (about 500 meters uphill from the cable car). A moderate level of fitness and proper footwear are required, so it is not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
Take advantage of being in the area to explore the lively center of Chamonix or ride the cog railway to Mer de Glace. If you’re looking for more adrenaline, the Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you up to 3,842 meters to touch the sky.
Always bring warm clothing and a waterproof jacket, even if it’s sunny in the valley, because at 2,352 meters the weather can change in minutes. It is crucial to carry enough water, good trekking boots, and to keep track of the time of the last cable car down so you don’t get stranded on the mountain.
