Discover Sammallahdenmäki in Rauma. A unique experience to explore its history and significance.
Sammallahdenmäki is open year-round, 24 hours a day, as it is an open-air archaeological site. It is easily reached by car from Rauma (about 15 km northeast), with free parking available; there are also local buses. More details at Visit Rauma.
Visiting is completely free, with no need to buy tickets. You will only pay for transport or parking if applicable. Check updates on the official Visit Rauma website.
It is recommended to allow 1 to 2 hours to explore the burial cairns and walking trails. If you use an audio guide, such as those from IAudioguia, you can enrich the experience at a relaxed pace.
It is a Bronze Age site (1500-500 BC) with 33 burial cairns, one of the best-preserved in Scandinavia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. It represents ancient funerary practices in Finland. More information at UNESCO.
Summer (June to August) is ideal because of the good weather and long daylight hours; avoid winter because of snow and cold. Go in the morning for fewer crowds and better light for photos.
The terrain is uneven, with gravel paths and hills, so it is not fully wheelchair accessible. There is a main accessible viewpoint, but check with Visit Rauma for adapted options.
In Rauma, 15 km away, visit Old Rauma (also UNESCO-listed) with its wooden houses and the Rauma Museum. Other options include the Church of the Holy Cross. You can combine it all into a full day trip.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring mosquito repellent in summer and water; there are information panels, but download an audio guide at IAudioguia for explanations in English. Check the weather and go with a guide if you are traveling in a group.
