¿Sabías que esta colina desafió bombas nazis y ahora te invita a volar bajo auroras boreales?
The resort usually opens during the winter season from 12:00 to 19:00, although hours vary depending on the month and daylight. It is located very close to the city center, reachable in 10 minutes by taxi or 45 minutes on foot; check the latest schedules on its official website.
Access to the natural trails and scenic viewpoints on the hill is completely free if you are going for a walk. You only need to pay if you want to use the ski lifts (Ski Pass) or rent ski equipment, with prices around €30–45 per day.
If you only want to enjoy the panoramic views and take a walk, 1 to 2 hours will be enough. If you plan to ski, snowboard, or try the summer sled, I recommend setting aside at least half a day.
Ounasvaara is not just about sports; it is a site with settlements dating back to the Stone Age and a cultural landmark for locals. It is the best natural viewpoint for understanding the geography of Rovaniemi and its connection to the Kemijoki River.
In winter, going up at night is ideal for trying to see the Northern Lights away from light pollution. In summer, June and July are perfect for enjoying the Midnight Sun from the summit.
The main facilities, such as the hotel and the slope-side restaurants, are accessible. However, because of the steep and snowy terrain, access to the trails and the summit is difficult for wheelchairs.
Given its proximity to the city center, you can combine your visit with the Arktikum science museum or the famous Santa Claus Village, both just a short drive or bus ride from the base of the hill.
Dress in thermal layers, as the wind at the summit makes it feel much colder than in the city. If you do not ski, rent snowshoes to explore the forests beyond the marked slopes.
