A natural and landscaped park with a rich history and scenic beauty, blending human design with the majesty of Finnish nature.
The nature reserve is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. However, the famous observation tower is usually open from May to September, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; we recommend checking the exact hours on Luontoon.fi before your trip.
Good news! Entry to both the Aulanko Nature Reserve and the observation tower is completely free. It is one of the best free experiences you can enjoy in Finland.
To enjoy it without rushing, we suggest setting aside 2 to 3 hours. This will give you enough time to walk the main trails, climb the tower for panoramic photos, and visit the Bear Cave.
It was created by Colonel Hugo Standertskjöld in the late 19th century as an English-style park. Its landscapes are so iconic that they are said to have inspired the composer Jean Sibelius to create his famous work 'Finlandia.'
Summer offers the best weather and guaranteed access to the tower, but autumn is spectacular because of the 'ruska' colorful foliage. If you go in summer, try to visit at sunset to watch the sun go down over Lake Vanajavesi.
The main trails are wide and gravel-covered, suitable with assistance, and you can drive to the base of the tower. However, keep in mind that access to the top of the tower is only by stairs, and some forest areas have slopes.
Right next door you have the Scandic Aulanko Spa if you are looking to relax. In addition, the impressive Häme Castle is only a 10-minute drive toward the city center.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, as you will want to explore the trails around Swan Lake. For a complete experience, download our audio guide at IAudioguia.com and discover the hidden secrets of Colonel Standertskjöld as you walk.
