The castle is open from June to August from 10:00 to 18:00, with reduced hours in May, September and October (Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00). You can walk there from the center of Savonlinna or take a bus; the official site is Savonlinna.fi for more details and an interactive map.

Built in 1475 by Erik Axelsson Tott to defend Finland against Russian invasions, it is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scandinavia and the venue of the Savonlinna Opera Festival since 1972. Summer, especially July during the Savonlinna Opera Festival, is ideal thanks to the warm weather and vibrant cultural events. Avoid the snowy winter; visit early in the morning during high season to avoid crowds and enjoy the best light over the lake.
