El Volcán Santa Ana, conocido también como Ilamatepec, es el más alto de El Salvador con 2.381 metros de altura y un cráter que alberga un lago turquesa único en el mundo.
The volcano is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. To get there, you must first head to Los Volcanes National Park (Cerro Verde) from Santa Ana. It is recommended to arrive by private vehicle or organized tour, as public transportation access is limited. More details are available on the official tourism website.
Admission costs $6 for foreigners and $3 for nationals (2023 prices). Tickets are purchased at the entrance booth of Cerro Verde National Park. Children under 6 enter free of charge. It is recommended to bring cash in U.S. dollars or Salvadoran colones.
The round-trip route takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours, including time to enjoy the views. The trail includes a 2.5 km ascent (medium-high difficulty). The exact time varies depending on the group's pace and weather conditions.
At 2,381 meters above sea level, it is the highest volcano in the country and one of the most active (its last eruption was in 2005). Its crater contains a unique turquoise sulfur lake in Central America. It is considered sacred by local Indigenous communities.
The dry season (November-April) offers the best views from the summit. It is recommended to start the hike early (before 10:00 am) to avoid cloud cover and intense heat. Weekends usually have more visitors.
The trail is uneven with steep slopes, so it is NOT wheelchair accessible. People with medical conditions or older adults should assess their physical endurance. There are rest areas at the base.
Nearby are: 1) Lake Coatepeque (30 min, ideal for lunch with a view) official info, 2) the Flowers Route (45 min), and 3) the historic center of Santa Ana with its impressive Gothic cathedral.
1) Wear non-slip footwear, 2) Bring sunscreen and at least 2 liters of water, 3) Hire the mandatory guide for safety ($3-5 additional), 4) Do not approach the edge of the active crater. Check current conditions at +503 2133-1001 (Mitur).
