The hikes are available all day, but it is recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the heat, as there are no fixed closing hours since it is an open natural area. To get there, you can drive along the coastal highway from San Salvador (about 1 hour) or use public transportation to El Zonte and walk from the beach. More details on the official tourism website: El Salvador Travel.
Admission is free, as this is a natural trail in a public beach area. However, if you hire a local guide, the cost may range from USD 10 to 20 per person. Check with local agencies for guided packages.
It is recommended to set aside at least 2 to 3 hours for a full hike, including the ascent and descent, depending on your pace. If you are a beginner, allow extra time to enjoy the views and make stops. Bring water and snacks for a comfortable experience.
This area is part of El Salvador’s coastal ecosystem, with roots in the traditions of the Pipil Indigenous people who lived in the region and valued their connection to nature and the sea. Today, it serves as an escape for surfers and ecotourists, highlighting local biodiversity and environmental preservation. It is a place that brings together natural history and the modern surf culture of El Zonte.
The best time is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is sunny and less rainy. Choose early morning (6–9 AM) to avoid the intense afternoon heat and enjoy sunrise views. Avoid the rainy season from May to October because of possible landslides.
Unfortunately, the routes are natural trails with uneven terrain, steps, and slopes, so they are not accessible for wheelchairs or people with reduced mobility. Nearby viewpoints along the beach are suggested for similar views. Contact the Ministry of Tourism at +503 2244-0000 for adapted options.
Nearby you will find El Zonte’s surf beaches, ideal for lessons, and El Imposible National Park about 2 hours away by car for more nature. Also visit the village of El Zonte for local restaurants and sunset views along the coast. Explore more at TripAdvisor El Zonte.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and bring at least 2 liters of water per person. Go with a local guide if it is your first time to learn about the flora and fauna. Respect the environment by not leaving trash behind, and check the weather forecast before you go.
