An ancient Coptic Orthodox monastery with a rich history and deep spiritual significance, founded in the 4th century.
The monastery is open every day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To get there, you can hire a private vehicle (1.5 hours) or join organized tours from Cairo. We recommend checking schedules during the religious season on its official website.
Admission is free, although voluntary donations are accepted for the upkeep of the complex. Some tour operators include an administrative fee in their organized tours.
It is recommended to allow between 2 and 3 hours to calmly visit the ancient churches, the library, and the gardens. If you plan to attend religious services or delve deeper into its history, allow half a day.
Founded in the 4th century by Saint Macarius the Great, it is one of the oldest Coptic monasteries in the world and a spiritual center of the Desert of Scetis. The relics of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Macarius are preserved here, and it was crucial in the development of Christian monasticism.
From October to April, when temperatures are milder (20–25°C). Avoid the summer months (June–August) because of the extreme heat. Weekday mornings are less crowded than weekends.
The terrain is uneven, with sandy areas and steps in the old buildings. There is partial accessibility in newer areas, but we recommend calling ahead at +20 3 387 2019 to ask about specific needs.
Less than 15 minutes away are the Monastery of Saint Bishoy and the Monastery of the Virgin Mary (Deir El-Surian). It is also worth exploring the Coptic Museum of Wadi El Natrun and the area's ancient natural salt flats.
Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), bring water, and wear comfortable shoes for walking on sand. Respect prayer spaces and ask before photographing monks. If you are looking for detailed guides, IAudioguia offers specialized resources.
