A thousand-year-old fortress in Pamukkale, Egypt, witness to empires and cultures. Discover its history, architecture, and mysteries.
The site is open daily from 6:30 to 19:00 in summer and until 17:00 in winter. You can reach it from Denizli by bus or taxi; the main parking is near the upper entrance. More info on the official Pamukkale site.
The combined entry to Pamukkale and Hierapolis (including the Roman Castle) costs around 650 TRY for foreign adults (2023); students pay less. It is a single ticket valid for both sites, available at the box office or online.
It is recommended to spend 2-3 hours exploring the castle ruins and the walls of Hierapolis. This includes time for walking and photos; if you combine it with the terraces, plan for a full half day.
The Roman Castle is part of the ancient fortifications of Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman city founded in the 2nd century BC, famous for its thermal baths and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It represents Roman defense against invasions and offers stunning views over the white terraces.
Spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild climate; avoid summer due to extreme heat. At sunrise or sunset, the light enhances the ruins and terraces for perfect photos.
There is partial access with ramps in Hierapolis, but the Pamukkale terraces require walking on uneven paths without shoes. A lightweight wheelchair or assistance is recommended; check at the entrance for adapted routes.
Nearby are the thermal terraces of Pamukkale, Cleopatra's Pool, and the Hierapolis Museum. In Denizli, 20 km away, visit the Kaklık cable car or Lake Acıgöl. All within easy reach.
Wear comfortable shoes that can get wet (or go barefoot on the terraces), sunscreen, water, and a hat. Do not use creams in the thermal pools and respect the rules: no touching the ruins. Download the map from the Museums of Türkiye.
