Admission costs 160 EGP (about $10 USD) for adult foreign visitors. Students with an international ID pay half. Egyptians and Arab visitors have special rates. Updates at Ministry of Antiquities.
The full visit takes 1 to 2 hours. It includes the step pyramid, its mortuary temple, and the surrounding mastabas. If combined with Dahshur or Saqqara, you will need half a day.
It represents the transition between step pyramids (such as Djoser) and smooth-sided pyramids. Built by Snefru, father of Khufu, it was the first attempt at a perfect geometric pyramid, although it partially collapsed.
From October to April, during the cooler season, avoiding the scorching summer. Mornings before 11 AM are ideal because of the temperature and smaller crowds.
The ground is uneven, with sand and stones. There are no ramps or special facilities. Assistance is recommended for wheelchairs, and it is best to consult specialized tour operators.
About 35 km to the north is Dahshur, home to the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. To the northeast is Saqqara, about 10 km farther. Many tours combine these three necropolises in one day. Detailed map here.
