¿Sabías que aquí, entre tumbas nobles, se esconden gansos pintados hace 4.500 años que parecen a punto de graznar?
The archaeological site is usually open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (although during Ramadan it may close earlier). As it is in a desert area about 100 km from Cairo, the best option is to hire a private car or driver, since public transport does not go directly to the entrance.
Admission is not free; you need to buy a ticket at the site ticket office, which includes access to the pyramid area and the mastabas. The price for foreigners is around 100 EGP (Egyptian pounds), although we recommend bringing cash in local currency as prices may vary.
To explore the famous Mastaba No. 17 and the collapsed pyramid at a relaxed pace, we suggest setting aside between an hour and a half and two hours. It is a less crowded site than Giza, which allows you to enjoy the interiors and the landscape without rush or crowds.
These 4th Dynasty tombs are crucial because they show the architectural transition toward the great pyramids and belonged to nobles close to Pharaoh Sneferu. The famous 'Meidum Geese' frieze comes from here, a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art now displayed in Cairo.
The best time is during the winter months (October to April) to avoid the extreme desert heat. Try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the midday sun and get the best light for photographing the structures.
Unfortunately, the site presents many access difficulties due to the sandy, uneven terrain and the narrow tunnels used to enter the mastabas. It is not adapted for wheelchairs and requires some physical effort to explore the interiors.
Right next to it stands the enigmatic Meidum Pyramid, known as the 'false pyramid', which is essential to visit together with the mastabas. If you have a vehicle, you can combine this excursion with a visit to the Faiyum Oasis or the pyramids of Hawara and el-Lahun.
Bring closed shoes, a flashlight for the dark interiors, and plenty of water, as there are no services inside the enclosure. To understand what you are seeing without relying on local guides, we recommend downloading an immersive audio guide at IAudioguia.com before your trip.
