A coastal paradise on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, famous for its crystal-clear waters and white sands.
Al Obayed Beach is a public beach with free access throughout the day. To get there, it is recommended to take the coastal road from Marsa Matruh (15 minutes by car from the center). No reservation is required. More info at the Egypt Tourism Office.
Access to the beach is free. You only need to pay if you use additional services such as sun loungers, umbrellas (around 50-100 EGP per day), or water activities. Bring cash in Egyptian pounds.
Ideally, dedicate half a day (4-5 hours) to enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the surroundings. If you plan a picnic or want to watch the sunset, stay until the afternoon.
It is part of the coastline where ancient Roman ports stood during Cleopatra's era. The turquoise waters and nearby caves offered shelter to sailors. Today it is a symbol of coastal tourism in the Egyptian Mediterranean.
The high season is from June to September (25-33°C). To avoid crowds, visit in May or October. Mornings (8:00-11:00) are peaceful, while afternoons are lively with locals.
The beach has natural access without official ramps. The sandy area is accessible with amphibious chairs (available for rent at nearby hotels). It is recommended to go with a companion due to the lack of adapted infrastructure.
5 km away is the Rommel Cave (a World War II military cave), the Marsa Matruh Corniche (seafront promenade), and Cleopatra Beach and Agiba Beach (famous for its cliffs).
Essentials: sunscreen, a hat, bottled water, and water shoes (because of rocks in some areas). Extra tip: bring snorkeling gear to see fish near the rock formations. Avoid the middle of the day (12:00-15:00) because of the intense sun.
