Fortaleza icónica en lo alto de una colina en El Cairo, construida por Saladino en el siglo XII como defensa contra los cruzados y sede de poder durante siglos. Alberga mezquitas, palacios y vistas panorámicas de la ciudad.
The Citadel of Saladin is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We recommend using a taxi or a private transport service to get there, as public transportation can be complicated. It is an iconic site and easy to find on any city map.
Admission costs 300 EGP for foreign visitors. It is not strictly necessary to buy tickets in advance, as you can purchase them directly at the ticket office. However, during high season, arriving early will help you avoid the lines. For more details, you can visit the Cairo Government website.
For a complete and unhurried visit, we suggest allowing between 2 and 3 hours. This will give you enough time to explore the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the museums, and enjoy the impressive views of Cairo.
The Citadel of Saladin, built in the 12th century by Sultan Saladin, was a formidable defensive fortress and the seat of the Egyptian government for more than 700 years. It is a majestic testament to Egypt’s medieval Islamic history, housing palaces and mosques that mark different eras. It played a key role in the defense of Cairo against the Crusades and many later invasions.
The best time to visit is early in the morning, right when it opens, or late in the afternoon before closing. This helps you avoid the crowds and the intense heat, especially during the summer months. From October to April is the ideal season thanks to the milder temperatures.
Due to its historic layout and the presence of many stairs and uneven ground, accessibility for people with reduced mobility may be limited in certain areas. Some zones, such as the main courtyards, are more accessible, but a full exploration can be challenging. We recommend planning ahead and perhaps contacting the administration at +20 2 2512 8585 for specific information.
Very close to the Citadel you will find Islamic Cairo, including the famous Khan el-Khalili, a vibrant souk, as well as the Mosque of Ibn Tulun and the Gayer-Anderson Museum. You can easily spend the rest of the day exploring these historical and cultural treasures. I invite you to discover more about the richness of the area on our IAudioguide blog.
Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a hat, especially if you visit during the hot season. Do not forget your camera, as the views are spectacular. Consider hiring a local guide to enrich your experience with stories and details you might otherwise miss. And of course, do not hesitate to ask us if you need an audio guide so you do not miss a thing!
