Elphinstone Reef can only be visited through diving or snorkeling tours from Marsa Alam or Port Ghalib. It has no fixed opening hours, but departures usually run between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., depending on the operator. We recommend booking with certified centers such as Red Sea Divers or Emperor Divers. Contact them to confirm schedules.
Diving tours cost between €80 and €150 depending on the service level for 2 to 3 dives. Snorkeling usually ranges from €40 to €70. Basic equipment, transfers, and meals are often included, but check with your operator. For example, Scuba Travel offers packages from €95. Updated prices are available at MarsaAlam.com.
The full tour lasts 8 to 10 hours, including transfers of 1 to 2 hours each way. Time in the water varies: divers typically enjoy 45 to 60 minutes per dive, while snorkelers may spend 2 to 3 hours in the water. Breaks and lunch on board are usually included.
It is one of the top 10 vertical reefs on the planet: a 400-meter-long underwater plateau with walls that drop to 100 meters deep. It is renowned for its hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and spectacular corals. It was named in honor of the British colonial governor Lord Elphinstone in the 19th century.
The ideal season is from March to June and from September to November, when the waters at 24°C to 28°C offer the best visibility of 30 to 40 meters. July and August have stronger currents and are less recommended for beginners. Check forecasts at Windguru.
Accessibility is limited: boats usually have narrow ladders, and getting into the water requires some mobility. Some operators such as Handisub offer adapted tours on request. Contact them at least 72 hours in advance.
