Discover Lake Qarun in Moeris. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
As a natural reserve, the lake is accessible 24 hours a day, but visiting between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM is recommended to make the most of daylight. It is located in the Faiyum Oasis, about a 2-hour drive from Cairo, and the best option is to hire private transport or join an organized tour.
Visiting the public shores is free, although entering the protected Faiyum area usually requires a small entrance fee (approx. 5–10 USD for foreign visitors). Many visitors choose to access the lake through hotels or restaurants by the shore, paying only for what they consume.
Set aside between 2 and 3 hours to enjoy a boat ride, birdwatching, and a meal by the water. If you also plan to visit nearby waterfalls or ruins, you should dedicate the whole day.
It is the remnant of the ancient Lake Moeris, used by the pharaohs to regulate the Nile floods and as a royal hunting ground. Nearby are important archaeological sites such as the temple of Qasr Qarun.
The ideal season is from October to April to avoid extreme heat and enjoy the bird migration. The best time of day is undoubtedly sunset, when the sun sets over the desert and reflects on the water.
Direct access to the natural shore is difficult because of the sand and uneven terrain. However, most tourist restaurants and hotels on the southern shore have ramps and facilities adapted for wheelchairs.
You are very close to the famous pottery village, Tunis Village, perfect for buying handicrafts. It is also worth visiting the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan or the ruins of the ancient city of Karanis.
Swimming in the lake is not recommended due to the high salinity and the presence of parasites; a boat ride is a better choice. Bring insect repellent if you plan to stay until dusk, and do not leave without trying the local fish in the area’s restaurants.
