This museum in the Ecuadorian Andes preserves pre-Hispanic artifacts that tell the story of ancient Andean cultures, from ceramics to stone tools, connecting the past with the present of the Carchi region.
The museum is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturdays until 1:00 pm. You can easily get there from downtown San Gabriel on foot (10 minutes from the main square) or by local transport. We recommend confirming hours at: Its official page.
General admission has a symbolic cost of $1.50 USD. Children and older adults pay $0.50 USD. On Sundays, admission is free for local citizens upon presentation of identification.
It is recommended to allow between 1 and 1.5 hours to fully appreciate the 4 exhibition rooms, which include archaeological pieces from the Cañari and Inca cultures, as well as colonial-era evidence.
It safeguards unique pre-Columbian remains from the northern Andean region of Ecuador, including ritual ceramics and tools that show the transition between the Cañari and Inca cultures. Its collection explains the historical development of Carchi Province.
The dry season (from June to September) is ideal because of the stable weather. Weekday mornings are less crowded. Avoid local holidays, when visitor numbers are usually higher.
It has access ramps and adapted areas on the ground floors. To confirm the availability of specific services, contact +593 6 257 2220 before your visit.
Cerro El Socavón, a natural viewpoint, is 15 minutes away, and Yahuarcocha Lagoon is 40 minutes away by car. In San Gabriel itself, do not miss the Main Church and the Indigenous handicraft market.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring a light jacket because the weather is unpredictable, and stay hydrated due to the altitude (2,650 meters above sea level). Ask about informational brochures or guided tours available at no additional cost.
