Los Frailes Beach is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day. To get there, you can take a bus from Puerto Lopez or Manta heading south, or a taxi/moto-taxi that will drop you at the reserve entrance. From there, there is a short walk, or you can take a pickup truck for an additional cost.
Good news! Access to Los Frailes Beach is completely free. It is part of Machalilla National Park, and there is no admission fee.
To fully enjoy the beach, the scenic trails, and perhaps a swim, we recommend planning at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours. If you want to relax without rushing, you could easily stay even longer.
Los Frailes Beach is famous for its pristine natural beauty and for being within Machalilla National Park, one of Ecuador’s most important protected areas. Its name comes from rock formations that, according to legend, resemble kneeling friars in prayer.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to December, when days are sunny and humidity is lower. To avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, I suggest arriving early in the morning, right when it opens.
Unfortunately, access to Los Frailes Beach involves walking along dirt and sandy paths, and it does not have specific infrastructure for people with reduced mobility. The entrances and paths can be challenging, especially for wheelchairs.
Very close to Los Frailes Beach, you can explore other places in Machalilla National Park such as Isla de la Plata (known as the 'little Galapagos') for seabird watching, the community of Agua Blanca with its sulfur lagoon, or enjoy activities in Puerto Lopez.
Of course! Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat or cap, and insect repellent. Don’t forget your camera to capture the scenery. Keep in mind that there are no vendors on the beach, so bring your own snacks. And most importantly: do not leave trash behind and respect nature!
