The Yahuarcocha Ecological Trail is generally open during the day, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, although it is advisable to check the official website for any changes. You can easily get there by taxi from Ibarra, or by public transport that drops you near the lake. Get your boots and camera ready!
Good news! Access to the Yahuarcocha Ecological Trail is generally free, allowing you to enjoy nature at no cost. However, there may be small charges for additional services such as parking if you come in your own vehicle. Be sure to bring some cash just in case!
To fully enjoy the Ecological Trail, we recommend setting aside between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. This will allow you to walk at a relaxed pace, take photographs, and soak in the natural beauty without rushing. Don’t forget your water bottle and sunscreen.
Yahuarcocha Lake, whose name means 'Lake of Blood' in Kichwa, has a deep history linked to Caranqui culture and pre-Inca battles. It is said that fierce combat took place in its waters. Today, it is a vital ecosystem and a symbol of the region’s natural wealth, home to various water birds and local flora.
For the best experience, we suggest visiting the trail during Ecuador’s dry season (June to September), when the weather is more stable. Early morning (before 10 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM) are the best times to avoid the strongest heat and enjoy the peace and perfect light for photographs.
Unfortunately, much of the Yahuarcocha Ecological Trail has uneven terrain and changes in elevation, making it poorly accessible for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. Caution is recommended, and if you have doubts, contact the local administration for more details: Ibarra Municipality.
There is plenty to do! Near the lake, you can enjoy boat rides, visit the Yahuarcocha International Racetrack if you like motorsports, or simply savor the local cuisine at the restaurants along the lakeshore. You can also explore downtown Ibarra, known for its colonial architecture. For more ideas, visit Ibarra Tourism.
Of course— for an unforgettable visit, bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, water, and insect repellent. Don’t forget your camera to capture the flora and fauna. Respect nature and follow the signs to help keep the trail clean. And above all, get ready to disconnect and enjoy the peace!
