Discover the essence of Playas through its vibrant Boardwalk, a meeting point of history, culture, and local life.
The Boardwalk is a public space open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you can visit at any time. However, most restaurants and shops generally operate between 9:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
Access to the Boardwalk and the beach is completely free. You only need to budget for optional services such as renting beach tents, umbrellas, or enjoying local cuisine at nearby restaurants.
For a relaxed walk and to take a few photos, we recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours. If you plan to eat there or head down to the beach to enjoy the sea, it is best to dedicate at least half a day.
General Villamil Playas is famous because UNESCO declared it the place with the second-best climate in the world, making it a privileged destination. The Boardwalk is the tourist heart of this historic city, named in honor of independence leader José de Villamil.
Beach season, from January to April, is ideal if you are looking for intense sun and heat, although it is busier; during the rest of the year the climate is cooler. The best time of day is undoubtedly sunset, when you can see spectacular sunsets over the ocean.
Yes, the Boardwalk promenade has ramps and suitable paving for comfortable access with wheelchairs or strollers. Keep in mind that direct access to the beach sand may be more difficult without assistance.
Just a few steps away you will find a wide variety of restaurants specializing in seafood and traditional Ecuadorian food. You can also visit Playas Central Park and the church, which are a few blocks away.
Always bring high-SPF sunscreen, as the equatorial sun is very strong, even on cloudy days. We recommend trying the famous green plantain empanadas or seafood rice at local eateries for a complete experience. See restaurant options here.
