Discover Colta Lagoon in Riobamba. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Colta Lagoon is a natural open-access area, so it does not have closing hours. It is located about 15 kilometers from Riobamba, on the road leading to Guamote and the south of the country. You can easily get there by public transportation, taking a bus to Colta from the Riobamba bus terminal, or by taxi or private vehicle. It is ideal for a peaceful outdoor getaway.
Good news! Access to Colta Lagoon is completely free. It is a natural attraction open to the public with no entrance fee, allowing you to enjoy its scenic beauty at no cost. You can walk around, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere freely.
To fully enjoy Colta Lagoon, we recommend spending between 1 and 2 hours. During your visit, you can walk along its shores, watch birds, enjoy mountain views, and, if you wish, even take a boat ride (subject to availability from local operators). It is perfect for relaxing and connecting with nature.
Colta Lagoon has great historical and cultural importance, as it is believed that the first Spanish city in Ecuador, Santiago de Quito, was founded nearby in 1534. In addition to this colonial milestone, the lagoon is part of the ancestral landscape of the Puruhá people, who consider it a sacred and culturally significant site. It is a place where history and nature intertwine.
The best time to visit Colta Lagoon is during the dry season, from June to September, when the weather is sunnier and the views are clearer. Early morning or late afternoon are the ideal times of day, as the light is perfect for photography and there are fewer visitors, allowing you to enjoy the tranquility of the landscape.
General access to the shores of Colta Lagoon is relatively flat, which makes movement easier. However, it does not have specific infrastructure adapted for wheelchair users, such as ramps or dedicated paved paths. The experience may depend on the type of wheelchair and the support available, but the beauty of the landscape can be enjoyed from several points near the road.
Very close to Colta Lagoon, you can visit the Balbanera Church, considered the first Catholic church built in Ecuador in 1534. You can also extend your trip south to visit the picturesque town of Guamote and its famous Indigenous market, especially on Thursdays, offering a deeper immersion into local culture.
For the best visit, we recommend bringing warm and windproof clothing, as the weather can change quickly. Do not forget your camera to capture the beautiful landscapes and birds. If you are looking for a more immersive experience in local history and culture, consider hiring a tour guide to learn in depth about the colonial and ancestral history of the place. And of course, enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings!
