Donde el campanario coquetea con la torre de Pisa y las piedras guardan secretos de canteros, huevos de gaviota y órganos barrocos
The church generally opens every day from 08:00 to 12:00 and again in the late afternoon around 18:00, especially during the summer season. It is located in the heart of the town, overlooking the main square, Trg Petra Krešimira IV, making it the central landmark that is impossible to miss while walking through the old town.
Admission to the Church of the Assumption of Mary is free for individual visitors who wish to pray or admire its architecture. However, voluntary donations for the upkeep of this historic monument are appreciated, and please note that special events or sacred concerts may have an associated cost.
A full visit usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes, enough time to admire the altarpiece, the ceiling, and the details of the exterior façade. It is a quick but culturally rich stop that fits perfectly while exploring the center, ideal to combine with a visit to the nearby Pag Tourist Office.
Built in the 15th century, it is an architectural gem that blends Gothic and Renaissance styles, with a façade designed under the influence of the master Juraj Dalmatinac. Its greatest treasure is the Gothic crucifix of the Holy Cross, considered miraculous by locals, which makes it the island’s most important spiritual center.
The ideal time to visit is early in the morning to avoid the heat and to see how the sun lights up the lace-like stone rose window on the façade. If you travel in August, try to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption on the 15th, when the church becomes the focal point of an impressive traditional procession.
Access to the main nave is relatively easy since it is at ground level on the square, although as an old building there may be small uneven surfaces or thresholds at the entrance. It is recommended to come with someone to help overcome the entrance step, as there are no modern ramps integrated into the historic structure.
Directly opposite, on the same square, stands the Rector’s Palace, home to the famous Pag Lace Gallery, a must-see recognized by UNESCO as intangible heritage. You can also walk a short distance to the old salt warehouses or explore more routes on the Pag Tourist Board website.
Remember to dress respectfully, covering your shoulders and knees, as they are quite strict about the dress code because it is an active place of worship. I also recommend keeping quiet and, if you have the chance, noticing the details of the side altars, which often go unnoticed by most tourists who only look at the central nave.
