Discover the City Gate in Trogir. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The City Gate of Trogir, also known as the Land Gate, is part of the old walls and is open to the public 24 hours a day. You can reach it on foot from anywhere in Trogir’s old town, as it is the main entrance to the medieval city. It does not have a closing time as such, since it is a gateway into the city.
Good news! Access to and passage through Trogir’s City Gate is completely free. It is an integral part of the old town and provides entry to the city’s streets and squares, so there is no admission fee.
The City Gate is primarily an access point and an architectural landmark. It will take only a few minutes to walk through it and admire its beauty. However, we recommend allowing at least 15–30 minutes to observe it, take photos, and enjoy the surrounding atmosphere, which includes the City Loggia and the Clock Tower right beside it.
The City Gate is of great historical importance because it was the main entrance to the walled city of Trogir for centuries. Built in the 17th century, with a Renaissance gateway, it symbolized the city’s defense and control. The Lion of Saint Mark, symbol of Venice, above the gate bears witness to Venetian influence in the region.
The best time to visit the City Gate is early in the morning or at sunset, when the light is softer and the heat less intense, especially in summer. During the low season, in spring or autumn, the weather is more pleasant and there are fewer tourist crowds. It will let you enjoy the atmosphere even more!
Access to the City Gate does not present major challenges, as it is a level entrance from the main road. However, once inside the old town, the cobbled streets can be somewhat uneven. It is advisable to proceed with caution if you use a wheelchair or have reduced mobility.
Right next to the City Gate, you will find the City Loggia, the Clock Tower, and the Trogir Market outside the walls. Just a short walk away, inside the city, are the impressive Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, Cipiko Palace, and countless charming alleys to explore. Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and every corner is a gem!
Of course, here are a couple of tips: Take photos from both sides of the gate, especially at sunset to capture the atmosphere. After passing through it, do not forget to visit the Loggia and the Clock Tower. If you enjoy history, look for the details of the Lion of Saint Mark. And of course, get lost in the streets of Trogir waiting just beyond the gate!
