Donde los vikingos de Hollywood, los piratas del Adriático y las ostras rebeldes escribieron una historia que ni el guionista más loco hubiera imaginado
As a protected natural reserve, road access to the bay is free 24 hours a day, although restaurants and boat tours generally operate from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can easily drive to the viewpoints or take a sea excursion from the port of Vrsar.
Enjoying the panoramic views from the road is completely free. However, if you want to take a boat excursion or visit Romuald's Cave, prices vary depending on the tour operator, usually ranging from 20 to 40 euros per person.
If you are only making a quick stop at the viewpoint to take photos, 30 minutes is enough. For the full experience with a boat ride and a meal at the local restaurants, we recommend setting aside at least 3 hours of your day.
This flooded canyon is famous for Saint Romuald's Cave, where a hermit lived during the Middle Ages, and for its age-old shellfish farming tradition. It also famously served as a filming location for the 1958 movie 'The Vikings,' standing in for a Scandinavian fjord.
The best season is from May to September to enjoy sunny weather and boating. We recommend going early in the morning to see the water like a mirror, or at sunset to enjoy incredible golden light over the hills.
The main roadside viewpoint is accessible by car, although the ground can be somewhat uneven. Unfortunately, access to the cave is difficult and not all tourist boats are adapted, so we suggest checking directly with the boat company before booking.
You are just a short distance from the old town of Vrsar and the romantic city of Rovinj. It is also well worth visiting the mysterious medieval ruins of Dvigrad, located a few kilometers inland in the valley.
Do not leave without trying the fresh oysters and mussels at the restaurants along the shore, as they are internationally recognized for their quality. And remember to bring your camera and an audio guide to fully understand the geology and legends of this unique landscape.
