The complex is generally open every day from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, although in summer closing time is extended until 9:00 PM. It is important to remember that tourist access is restricted during Mass times, so I recommend checking the official schedule before you go.
Admission to the complex is not free; the ticket costs approximately €10 for adults and includes access to the basilica, the baptistery, the atrium, and the bell tower. It is a small price to pay to see one of the most important UNESCO sites in Croatia.
To explore the atrium, the baptistery, admire the mosaics at a relaxed pace, and climb the bell tower, you will need between 45 and 60 minutes. If you use an audio guide to understand the historical details, set aside a full hour to enjoy it without rushing.
It is the most valuable cultural monument in Poreč and a unique example of early Byzantine art from the 6th century preserved almost intact. Its golden mosaics are world-famous and rival those of Ravenna in beauty; it is a jewel that defines the history of Istria.
The best time is early in the morning, right at 9:00 AM, when the light falls directly on the apse mosaics and makes them shine. You will also avoid the large tourist groups that usually arrive in mid-morning.
The ground floor, which includes the basilica and the atrium, is mostly accessible, although the ancient paving may be uneven in some areas. Unfortunately, access to the bell tower, which offers panoramic views, is only via narrow stairs.
You are in the heart of the old town, so after your visit you can walk along the ancient Decumanus Street or visit Marafor Square and the remains of the Roman temples. The entire historic center of Poreč can easily be explored on foot from the basilica.
As it is an active sacred site, respectful dress is required: make sure your shoulders and knees are covered or you may be denied entry. Do not forget to climb the bell tower; the views of the city and the Adriatic Sea are the best in the area.
