A Gothic-Renaissance monument dominating the skyline of Korčula, reflecting centuries of Venetian and Dalmatian history.
The cathedral is usually open every day, generally from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM during the high season, although hours are reduced in winter. It stands at the highest point of the peninsula, in the main square of the Old Town, so it is impossible to miss while wandering the streets.
Yes, there is a symbolic fee of around 3 to 5 euros, depending on the season, to enter the interior and support its conservation. This ticket usually also includes access to the bell tower, which is a must-have experience.
The visit is short but rewarding; with 30 to 45 minutes you will have enough time to explore the central nave and climb the bell tower. It is the ideal amount of time to listen to an audio guide that explains the details without rushing.
Built in the 15th century by local masters, it is a jewel of Gothic-Renaissance style and houses works by great masters such as Tintoretto. Its façade tells the story of the island and stands out for the masterful carving of the famous Korčula stone.
To avoid the cruise ship crowds, I recommend going first thing in the morning, around 9:00 AM. However, if you are looking for the perfect photo, climb the bell tower at sunset to watch the sun go down over the archipelago.
Access is difficult because of the historic architecture; the main entrance has steps and the town itself is full of stairways. Unfortunately, the bell tower is not accessible at all because of its narrow spiral staircase.
You are in the cultural epicenter; right next door you have the Bishop's Palace with the Abbey Treasury and the Town Museum in Gabrielis Palace. Just a few steps away you will also find the supposed birthplace of Marco Polo.
Remember that this is an active place of worship, so make sure to dress respectfully, covering your shoulders and knees. If you plan to climb the tower, wear comfortable shoes because the steps are steep and the passage is narrow.
