Discover the Zagreb Funicular in Zagreb. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The funicular operates every day from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (extended hours until midnight on public holidays). Departures every 10 minutes. You can check updates on Zagreb’s official public transport website: ZET Official Site.
A single ticket costs 5 HRK (about €0.66). Children under 6 travel free. Cards are not accepted: bring Croatian kuna in cash to buy your ticket at the cabin.
The full journey lasts only 64 seconds, making it the shortest public funicular in the world. It connects the Lower Town with the Upper Town across a 66-meter elevation difference.
It is a piece of industrial heritage: opened in 1893, it preserves its original cars and engine. It was Zagreb’s first mechanized transport system and a symbol of 19th-century urban development.
The early hours (before 9:00 a.m.) and after 8:00 p.m. usually have fewer tourists. Avoid weekends and public holidays at midday if you prefer a quieter visit. Winter is generally less busy than summer.
The original cars do not have adapted space for wheelchairs. The lower station requires climbing steps, but the upper station has level access. Visit with a companion if you need physical assistance.
In the Upper Town: the Museum of Broken Relationships (200 m), Zagreb Cathedral (5 minutes on foot), and Tkalčićeva Street. In the Lower Town: Dolac Market and the Croatian National Theatre. Interactive map here: Zagreb Tourism.
Advance booking is not available: tickets are purchased when boarding. Arrive 5 minutes early if you are traveling in a large group. For more details: ZET Public Transport Zagreb Funicular Info.
