¿Sabías que este bosque nuboso escondía un pulmón verde que casi desaparece en los 70? Ven, te cuento los secretos que solo los locales conocemos.
The reserve is open Monday to Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with last entry at 3:00 p.m. To get there, take the route from San José to Alajuela and then to Grecia; the main access point is at kilometer 5 on the road to Sarchí. You can contact the national park for more details at (506) 2290-8081 or visit the official SINAC website: www.sinac.go.cr.
Admission costs approximately $10 per adult and $5 for children and Costa Rican residents with ID. It is free for children under 5 and for people with disabilities who present certification. Buy tickets at the entrance or online through the SINAC system to avoid lines.
It is recommended to spend between 2 and 4 hours exploring the main trails and observing wildlife. If you are a curious visitor like me, plan a full morning to enjoy it without rushing, including time for photos and breaks at the viewpoints.
This reserve, established in 1975, protects more than 1,000 hectares of tropical humid forest with great biodiversity, serving as a biological corridor for endemic species such as the quetzal and monkeys. Its importance lies in water conservation and erosion prevention in the Alajuela region, contributing to Costa Rica’s ecological balance. More information is available on the SINAC website: www.sinac.go.cr.
The best period is the dry season from December to April, when there is less rain and better visibility for sightings. Go early in the morning, around 8:00 a.m., to avoid the midday heat and increase your chances of seeing animals active at dawn.
The main trails are of moderate difficulty with some steep sections, so they are not ideal for wheelchairs, but there is a short, flat trail near the entrance adapted for reduced mobility. We recommend contacting the staff at (506) 2290-8081 for guides or special options; the welcome area is accessible.
Nearby, just 20 minutes away by car, is Poás Volcano with its impressive active crater, and the Butterfly Garden in Sarchí, famous for its display of exotic species. You can also visit coffee farms in the Grecia area for a cultural tour; plan a day combining nature and adventure.
Bring insect repellent, comfortable hiking shoes, water, and sunscreen, as the climate can be humid. Follow leave-no-trace rules, use binoculars for sightings, and hire a local guide to learn more about the flora and fauna. Book in advance during high season through the SINAC portal.
