Discover the Prusia Sector of Irazú Volcano National Park, an oasis of nature and reforestation on the slopes of a sleeping giant.
The Prusia Sector of Irazú Volcano National Park is open Monday through Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To get there, traveling by private vehicle or taxi is the most recommended option, as direct public transportation is limited. It is located on the slopes of the volcano, and the roads are well signposted from Cartago. We recommend checking Google Maps for the most up-to-date route. You can find more details on the official SINAC website: Irazú Volcano National Park - SINAC.
Yes, there is an entrance fee for the Prusia Sector. For non-resident visitors, the price is $5 per person, while for nationals and residents it is ₡1,000. Children under 12 and adults over 65 (nationals) have a different rate. It is important to keep in mind that fees may be updated, so we suggest checking the official SINAC website before your visit.
To fully enjoy the Prusia Sector, which features an extensive network of trails through a beautiful forest, it is recommended to spend at least 3 to 4 hours. This will allow you to explore several of its trails at a relaxed pace, take photographs, and enjoy the natural surroundings without rushing. If you are a hiking enthusiast, you could even extend your visit to explore the paths more thoroughly.
The Prusia Sector has a history closely tied to reforestation and conservation. Originally, much of this area was used for agriculture. Today, it stands as a successful example of forest recovery programs, transformed into a dense forest of conifers and other species. Its importance lies in being a green lung of great ecological value and a vital source of water for the region, while also protecting the slopes of Irazú Volcano.
The best time to visit Prusia Park, and Irazú Volcano National Park in general, is during the dry season, from December to April, to avoid rain and enjoy clearer skies. However, it offers spectacular views year-round. As for the best time of day, we suggest going early in the morning, shortly after opening, to enjoy the शांत atmosphere, optimal light for photography, and to avoid possible crowds, especially on weekends.
Unfortunately, the Prusia Sector, due to the nature of its trails on mountainous terrain and slopes, is not fully accessible for people in wheelchairs or with severe reduced mobility. Most of the trails are dirt paths, uneven, and include some inclines. Certain areas near the entrance and picnic zones can be accessed, but walking the trails requires a certain level of physical fitness. We recommend contacting the park directly for more detailed information if you have questions: [email protected].
Yes, absolutely! You are very close to the summit of Irazú Volcano, which is a must-see and is located within the same national park, just a few minutes away by car. In addition, nearby you can visit the impressive Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago, or the Ruins of Ujarrás and the Lankester Botanical Garden if you are interested in flowers. For history lovers, the Guayabo National Monument is also an option, although it is a bit farther away.
For an excellent visit, we recommend bringing comfortable layered clothing, as the weather can change and turn cool; suitable hiking footwear (boots or sneakers with good grip); water, snacks, and sunscreen. Although there are restrooms and some picnic areas, there is no food for sale inside the sector. It is vital to respect the flora and fauna, stay on the trails, and take your trash back with you. And of course, do not forget a camera to capture the beautiful landscapes!
